In this post we are going to look at the topic, is CBD oil safe for cats? In the past few years, CBD has become very popular, especially with humans and dogs, but is CBD oil safe for cats? Based on limited study, i does appear to be safe, although not a great deal of research has been conducted on this topic as yet.
Does this mean you should or shouldn’t use CBD oil for your cat? Let’s take a look at the facts and everything we know so far.
What Is CBD Oil
CBD is an abbreviation to cannabidiol. If that name sounds recognisable, it’s because cannabidiol is a phyocannabinoid that is extracted from Cannabis plants. Although Cannabis plants contain more than 100 compounds, cannabidiol (CBD) is the most popular compound used for medical purposes.
It does not have a psychoactive affect which means you will not get high if you use it. CBD oil often contains olive, hempseed, coconut, and avocado is can be given orally to cats.
How Does CBD Oil Work?
CBD oils work in a very similar way to how vitamins work. If we take Vitamin E as an example, this works by increasing the Vitamin E supply of your circulatory system. CBD oils work exactly the same which is why it helps with regulate pain, moods, and sleep. It works by supplementing your ECS or endocannabinoid systems.
The endocannabinoid system is responsible for regulating bodily functions like appetite, pain, mood, and sleep. It’s made up of cannabinoid receptors which are neurons in your brown. CBD oils help to stimulate these neurons giving you health benefits without getting high. Cat’s and all other animals have this exact same system.
Is CBD Oil Safe for Cats?
At the time of writing this article there has only been a limited amount of study on the effects of CBD oil in cats. Based on this limited study, it does appear to be safe, but until further research has been done, it’s impossible to a definite yes.
This is why you should only use CBD oil under veterinary supervision. We will continue to update this post as and when new research or breakthroughs become available.
Is CBD Oil Legal?
The way it works is if a cannabis product contains less than 0.3 percent THC, it is classified as “hemp”. This means that it is legal and not a restricted substance. Pretty much most CBD oil fits this description. Another problem also lies in where exactly you live. Even in a state where cannabis is legal, a vet cannot tell the owner of a cat how to use the product as this may be illegal.
Benefits of CBD Oil
As the endocannabinoid system is shared, this means the use of CBD oil can have similar benefits in cats as it would in humans. Here are some of the health benefits of CBD oil:
- Relief of Inflammation and Pain
- Relief of Cancer Symptoms – May slow down tumor growth
- Relief of Cancer Treatment Side Effects
- Antiemetic – Relieves feelings of nausea
- May Relieve Stress
- May Relieve Anxiety
- May Promote Weight Loss and Appetite Control in Obese Cats
- Overall wellness
Risks and Concerns in Using CBD Oil in Cats
What are the risks of using CBD oil in cats? Although we said there has been limited research to date, the general opinion amongst veterinarians is that there are little to no side effects of giving your cat CBD oil. The problem is, every cat is very unique and each may react differently to the use of CBD oil.
One of the most common side effects that could occur is slight sedation. This may not be very obviously because cats are well known for their love of sleep. Just keep an eye on your cats napping schedule and if anything seems unusual or they are less energetic, reduce the dosage of the CBD oil.
Other possible side effects could be:
- Change in appetite
These are rare and are usually very mild. The main point is, always seek the advice of a veterinarian before introducing CBD into your cats routine.
How to Find Safe CBD for Cats
As you can imagine, you have to be extra careful when choosing a CBD oil. Here’s how you can choose a good CBD oil with tips on certain things to look out for:
- Look out for both the Certified Seal of the U.S. Hemp Authority™ or the National Animal Supplements Council (NASC) on the product. These are quality seals which meet have passed a third-party audit and meet industry-imposed standards.
- Don’t use any old CBD oil, use one that is specifically designed for cats.
- Always seek the advice of a veterinarian before purchasing a product. You could also use the American Holistic Veterinaray Medical Association who have a “Find a Vet” tool.
How Do You Give Your Cat CBD?
There are a number of ways you can give CBD to your cat:
1) Direct feeding
This involves taking the dropper and placing a drop directly into your cats mouth. This can be done by slightly lifting your cats head by the jaw. If your cat struggles then you can try the towel wrapping method to prevent your cat from escaping.
2) Add CBD oil to cat food
If the first method doesn’t work then adding CBD oil to your cats food is usually the next thing people try. To do this just simply measure out the required dosage of CBD and evenly disperse it on top of their food.
3) Add CBD oil to cat treats
This is exactly the same process as the method above but instead of using food you can use your cats favorite treats.
4) Using CBD treats
You can find different varieties of CBD treats which are specifically designed for cats. Again, always consult with a veterinarian before purchasing any of these treats.
5) Place the CBD in an empty food bowl
Your cat associates a food bowl with edible things. Placing the required dosage into an empty bowl means your cat may be curious and just take it in.
Hope you enjoyed this post on is CBD oil safe for cats? Just to summarise, there is currently not a great deal of research on the subject. Although most veterinarians agree that there are little to no side effects. Always seek the advice of a veterinarian before you introduce CBD oil to your cat.
